Google is rolling out a major software update for Android Auto and cars with Google built-in, expanding the capabilities available on vehicle infotainment screens.

The 2026 update brings a redesigned interface, immersive 3D navigation and high-definition video streaming while parked. Google says the features will roll out to compatible vehicles throughout the year, with availability depending on the car, feature and market. YouTube Comes to Android Auto

One of the biggest changes is the addition of high-definition video playback while parked. Google says supported cars will be able to access apps such as YouTube, with the experience designed for situations such as waiting while the vehicle charges.

The company says supported cars can receive video in full HD at up to 60fps, although availability will depend on the vehicle and supported app. Google has named BMW, Ford, Genesis, Hyundai, Kia, Mahindra, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Škoda, Tata and Volvo among the automakers involved in the initial rollout.

The video experience is designed specifically for parked use. Google has also announced a transition from video to audio for supported media experiences, allowing drivers to continue listening when video is no longer appropriate.

Immersive Navigation Changes the Map Experience

The update also introduces a redesigned navigation experience with immersive 3D visuals. Maps can display buildings, overpasses and terrain while highlighting useful road information such as lanes, traffic lights and stop signs.

Google says the new navigation experience is designed to work across different vehicle displays, including ultrawide, circular and other non-standard screen shapes.

Live Lane Guidance Uses the Car’s Camera

Live Lane Guidance is a separate feature for eligible cars with Google built-in. Google says the system uses the vehicle’s front-facing camera to analyse road lanes and markings, then provides real-time guidance when the driver needs to change lanes or take an exit.

This should not be confused with the standard Android Auto navigation experience. Live Lane Guidance depends on deeper integration between Google software and the vehicle’s hardware.

Gemini Gets Deeper Vehicle Integration

Cars with Google built-in are also receiving more capable Gemini functionality. Google says Gemini can answer questions related to the actual vehicle, including identifying dashboard warning lights or helping determine whether an item will fit inside the car.

This deeper integration is one of the distinctions between Android Auto and vehicles equipped with Google built-in, where Google works directly with automakers to access vehicle hardware and information.

The updated interface scales across non-standard dashboard displays, including screens found in upcoming vehicles from Indian automakers Tata and Mahindra.

Availability will vary by vehicle, automaker, country, account and supported app. Google has not indicated that every Android Auto-compatible vehicle will receive every feature.

The Unboxed Truth

The 2026 Android Auto update is more substantial than a simple interface refresh. Google is expanding the platform beyond phone-based navigation and media controls, while its work with automakers is enabling deeper vehicle integration on cars with Google built-in.

For drivers, the most visible changes will be the parked video experience and redesigned navigation. Live Lane Guidance and vehicle-specific Gemini features are more dependent on compatible hardware, so they should not be treated as universal Android Auto features.

Best for: Drivers with compatible vehicles who want richer navigation, entertainment and voice-assistance features.

Who Is This For: Android users and connected-car owners whose vehicles support the new Android Auto or Google built-in features.

How much does Android Auto cost globally and when will the update launch?

Android Auto is available as a free software experience for compatible Android phones and vehicles. Google is rolling out its 2026 updates gradually, with availability depending on the vehicle, feature, market and supported applications.
The refreshed experience covers compatible smartphone-connected Android Auto setups, while some features are specifically designed for vehicles with Google built-in. Indian availability will depend on compatible vehicles, software versions and Google’s rollout in the market.

How does Android Auto compete directly against Apple CarPlay?

Android Auto and Apple CarPlay both extend smartphone-based navigation, communication and media features to compatible vehicle displays. Google’s newer vehicle features add another layer through Google built-in, where supported cars can provide deeper integration with vehicle hardware.
For example, Google’s Live Lane Guidance uses the vehicle’s front-facing camera in eligible cars, while Gemini can provide vehicle-related assistance on supported Google built-in systems. These capabilities depend on vehicle hardware and are not universal Android Auto features.

Is the Android Auto update actually worth installing in your vehicle?

The update may be useful for drivers whose vehicles support the new features, particularly those interested in redesigned navigation, parked video playback and expanded voice assistance.
However, not every vehicle will receive every feature. Buyers and existing vehicle owners should check compatibility before expecting capabilities such as Live Lane Guidance or vehicle-specific Gemini assistance. For drivers with supported hardware, the update adds functionality without requiring a separate paid Android Auto subscription.
