IIT Delhi 2.0: Minister Dharmendra Pradhan Unveils Massive ₹430 Cr Vertical Expansion

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has laid the foundation for IIT Delhi’s first 10-storey academic block and a state-of-the-art 1,400-bed girls’ hostel. Backed by a ₹430 crore investment, these “Green-Tech” projects signal a new era of research and inclusivity for India’s premier tech hub.

The Infrastructure of Innovation

Union Minister Shri Dharmendra Pradhan officially launched two landmark projects at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi). These facilities are designed to meet the skyrocketing demand for high-end research space and residential security on campus.

Academic Block-103: The New Research Nerve Center

  • A Vertical First: Rising to 36.75 meters, this will be IIT Delhi’s first 10-storey academic building.
  • Scale & Scope: Spanning 5 lakh sq. ft., the facility features 150 research laboratories, 31 lecture theatres, and 150 faculty offices.
  • Tech-Hub: It will house the Educational Technology Services Centre, alongside essential amenities like banks and cafeterias.

Girls’ Hostel-50B: Scaling Inclusivity

  • Capacity: A 12-storey (B+G+12) configuration designed to accommodate 1,400 female students.
  • Modern Living: Features double-occupancy rooms equipped with built-in cupboards, study tables, and universal charging points.
  • Built-up Area: Approximately 3.9 lakh sq. ft. dedicated to residential and community spaces, including a massive dining hall.

Sustainable Excellence: The Green Mandate

Both projects are targeting a prestigious 4-star GRIHA certification. The development is not just about concrete; it is about “eco-conscious” engineering:

  • Passive Design: Utilizes natural cooling and lighting strategies to reduce the carbon footprint.
  • Energy & Water: Incorporates rooftop solar panels and comprehensive rainwater harvesting systems.
  • Ecology First: The project planning ensured zero tree felling, preserving the existing site ecology entirely.

The UDHQ Take: At Unbox Daily HQ (UDHQ), we look beyond the bricks and mortar to see how infrastructure shifts the “Human Experience.”

The End of the “Space Crunch”: IIT Delhi has historically struggled with a housing shortage, managing only half its student population on-campus. The 1,400-bed addition is a massive step toward 100% residential security, especially for female scholars who are often the most impacted by off-campus safety concerns.

Research at Altitude: By moving vertically (10 storeys), IIT Delhi is maximizing its land value without encroaching on its green cover. The addition of 150 specialized labs represents a massive boost in “Research Density,” allowing cross-disciplinary teams to collaborate under one roof.

The Life Difference: This isn’t just about a room to sleep in; it’s about “Zero-Friction Academic Living.” With 4-star green features and integrated labs, the next generation of engineers is being given a sanctuary that matches the high-performance demands of 2026’s global tech landscape.
