To counter travel disruptions caused by the West Asia crisis, Air India has announced 78 additional flights across 9 international routes from March 10–18, 2026, adding over 17,000 seats to key global destinations.

Between March 10 and March 18, 2026, Air India is significantly scaling up its international operations to support passengers affected by the ongoing conflict in West Asia. The airline will operate 78 additional flights on nine key routes, primarily connecting Delhi and Mumbai to major hubs in Europe, the United States, and South Asia. This strategic move adds approximately 17,660 seats to the network at a time when traditional transit hubs in the Middle East are facing severe operational constraints.

The expansion targets five major European gateways: London (Heathrow), Frankfurt, Paris (CDG), Amsterdam, and Zurich along with New York (JFK). To assist regional travellers, additional services have also been scheduled for Malé (Maldives) and Colombo (Sri Lanka). Air India is utilizing its long-haul fleet, including the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner for European sectors and the Boeing 777-300ER for the New York route, while the Airbus A320neo will handle the South Asian short-haul flights.

Strategic Standing and Global Context

In the current global aviation landscape, the conflict has forced many international carriers to reroute or cancel flights, leading to a massive spike in airfares with some one-way tickets to Europe reportedly touching ₹2-4 lakh. While major Gulf competitors like Emirates and Qatar Airways are grappling with airspace restrictions, Air India is leveraging its unique geographical advantage and “safe alternative” flight paths to maintain reliability. This proactive capacity boost not only fills a critical market gap but also reinforces Air India’s ambition to become a primary global hub carrier, independent of traditional Middle Eastern transit points.

Trivia: Did you know that the iconic “Maharaja” mascot was created in 1946 by Bobby Kooka? While he was originally designed for a memo pad, he eventually became the face of Indian grace and hospitality worldwide. Today, as part of the Tata Group, Air India is undergoing “Vihaan.AI,” a five-year transformation plan to reclaim its status as a world-class global airline.

UDHQ Take: At Unbox Daily HQ, we see this as more than just a schedule update; it is a vital safety net for the Indian diaspora and global travellers. In times of geopolitical uncertainty, the biggest value a brand can offer is reliability. By deploying an extra 17,600+ seats, Air India is effectively “unboxing” a solution for thousands of stranded passengers who are currently facing exorbitant fares and cancelled bookings.

For you, the traveller, this means you no longer have to be at the mercy of volatile transit hubs. Whether you are a student heading back to university in the UK, a professional traveling to the US, or a family planning a much-needed break in the Maldives, these additional flights provide a direct, dependable path. It brings peace of mind to the table, knowing that even when global air corridors are squeezed, there is a homegrown carrier ready to bridge the gap without compromising on safety or connectivity.
